I teach undergraduate courses on money and banking and the principles of economics and have co-authored with my wife a textbook on money and banking, now in its fifth edition. My Doctor of Philosophy dissertation was on property taxation, and in recent years I have returned to that topic. I am
interested in why governments of states vary in efficiency, and believe that greater reliance on property taxation may have the desirable effect of increasing efficiency.
A second topic of my research has been inflation. This involves examining how people attempt to adjust to inflation and the effect of inflation on the velocity of money. A third area of my research and writing is social security: primarily the difficulties encountered in indexing old-age and survivors’ benefits for inflation, the unexpected financial problems that now plague the system, the surprising cuts that United States Congress has made in some types of benefits, and the redistributional effects of social security.
