This volume was first published in 1980. Coated vesicles are distinct organelles whose existence has been recognized for many years. Since the original observations of the invaginations of erythroblast and oocyte membranes, coated vesicles have been found associated with a wide variety of membranes and they have been seen to be of importance in the uptake and transport of peptides, proteins and lipoproteins as well as in some cases as mediators of immune function. This book is a comprehensive treatment of coated vesicles and their involvement in the process of endocytosis (the engulfment of material in membranous enclosures).

An attempt to collate archetypal light optical microscopic images of molecular - especially protein - localization patterns, this work is intended for use by immunologists and immunopathologists. The book provides about 200 archetypal images with a precis of the nature of the molecule and the medical potential of the associated techniques, together with a reference to the primary literature. Finally, there are indices to the main listings and a list of commercial suppliers of antibodies. Colin Ockleford is an active Fellow of the Royal Microscopial Society and a consultant to a microscope manufacturer. He is the named inventor on two patents related to his work and winner of the 1983 Symington Prize of the Anatomical Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
