Dominique Collon was born on May 8, 1940, in Belgium. She is a daughter of Alexandre and Peironella (Fitzwilliams Hyde) Collon.
Collon Dominique studied at Columbia University where she received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1971.
Dominique Collon started her career as a curator at the British Museum, the Department of Western Asiatic Antiquities (later Ancient Near East, then the Middle East) from 1964. She worked there until 1968. She returned to the British Museum again in 1977 and started to work full-time from 1988. Dominique Collon also worked and traveled extensively in the Near East in Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. She specialized in the study of the iconography on ancient Mesopotamian and Anatolian cylinder-seals, Anatolia and Mesopotamia. Collon retired from the Museum in 2005.
Collon has written several books devoted to ancient cylinder seals, including Catalogue of the Western Asiatic Seals in the British Museum: Cylinder Seals II, Catalogue of the Western Asiatic Seals in the British Museum: Cylinder Seals III, Near Eastern Seals, 7000 Years of Seals. She is also an author of over one-hundred and fifty contributions to encyclopedias, conference proceedings, festschrifts, excavation reports, reviews, and reports.
