One of the most industrious and influential of early Romanian thinkers, Radulescu-Motru drew heavily on the energetism of Ostwald and the Personalism of Stern. From the former. Radulescu f°ok his central metaphysical hypothesis: that the ultimate reality is neither matter nor consciousness but energy, and the universe is the manifestation of the evolution of this energy in time. Much °f the universe is understandable by means of Positive science, which has as its goal complete and non-relative knowledge. However, there is one key manifestation of cosmic energy which eludes understanding in general, positivistic laws, and that is the individual human consciousness. Alone among existents, human consciousness can be aware of the nature of the universal process and so is described by Radulescu as being ‘correlated with’ or ‘reflecting’ cosmic evolution. In human consciousness, the highest form of existent, the universal process attains self-awareness.
