Manos developed an interest in photography at age thirteen through a school camera club in his hometown. In 1955 he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, United States.
Manos became a working professional photographer at the age of fifteen, covering the efforts of Martin Luther King, Jr., to desegregate public transportation in Montgomery, Alabama, United States.
At the ahe of nineteen Manos became the official photographer for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1964 Manos joined Magnum, and his photos subsequently appeared in Look, Life, Esquire and Sports Illustrated. Now, he lives in Boston, United States.
Manos' Look picture essay, "Funeral of a Soldier," won the New York Art Directors Club award in 1966. In 1974 he was commissioned to produce mural-size photographs of the people of Boston for the Bicentennial Pavilion, "Where's Boston?" which are on display at Boston's Faneuil Hall.
