Received education at home. Entry into service December 9, 1861 in the Horse Guards Regiment. Ranks: Lieutenant Colonel Army (1882), Colonel (1884), Major-General (1894), Lieutenant-General (1906), Adjutant General (1906).
In 1866-1868 served as adjutant chief of police.
In 1868 he retired, in 1877 returned to service. He participated in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.
