The last great representative of the Italian classical school, he nevertheless moved beyond the conventional classical methodology in his studies of monetary theory and policy. His work for the Reparations Commission in Germany after World War I resulted in his great work on inflation and confirmed his opinion that monetary methods were necessary to control inflation. He was a major architect of Italy’s postWorld War II reconstruction and his later publications concentrated on policy advice.
