Cornelia Hilda Kühn is an Afrikaans writer known under the pen-name Corlia Fourie.
Background
Corlia Fourie was born on December 11, 1944 in South Africa. Her father was the Hertzog Prize winner Mikro (CH Kühn), who was the creator of well-known characters in Afrikaans literature like Matewis and Meraai and the author of more than 100 books.
Education
Corlia Fourie matriculated at the Hendrik Verwoerd High School in Pretoria. She studied at University of Stellenbosch where received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965.
She worked as a journalist at Die Burger and Sarie, and later also as freelance journalist at Beeld and Huisgenoot. She initially became known in the 1980s as playwright and author of children's books, and later also as short story writer and novelist.
In 1992 she received the ATKV Prize for popular prose for her short story collection Liefde en geweld. In 1994 Die wit vlinder was one of three South African books that received honorary mention for the Noma Prize for books from Africa.
Achievements
Die meisie wat soos ’n bottervoël sing is one of her children's books that received the MER Prize and the Tienie Holloway Medal.
In 1988 Corlia was honoured, along with Philip de Vos and Maretha Maartens, by the International Youth Library in Munich by having their books chosen for an international display and recommended for translation.
Die volstruisie wat graag wou vlieg was one of 400 new books from 44 countries that was included in the International Youth Library's influential White Ravens Selection.
