Corneliu Michailescu was born on October 22, 1898 in Bucharest, Romania.
Corneliu attended the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Bucharest. Some time later, Michailescu decided to dedicate himself to art and since 1908 to 1912 he studied at present-day Bucharest National University of Arts.
After a while, he went on to study painting abroad. Corneliu travelled to Florence and Zurich, where he met Tristan Tzara and Marcel Iancu, and also concentrated on avant-garde style.
Michailesu held his first exhibition in 1922, where he exhibited his post-impressionism paintings. The exhibition inspired many people around the world. During the next ten years, the artist didn't show his works and started to work as a cubist artist.
In 1924 Corneliu took part in the first post-war Official Salon, where he exhibited his two main works, one of them was "The Castle Keepers", for which he also received a prize.
In 1931, Michailesu began experimenting with mescaline (a hallucinogen) under the supervision of Dr. Marinescu. From that moment, the painter started to create colorful paintings, some of which combined geometric elements with futuristic ideas and forms of analytical cubism.
In 1935 he settled down in Cernica, where he continued painting and probably started his first literary attempts.
