He began architectural training in the office of W. H. Parker where he served an apprenticeship of three years. After three successive years in the employ of James Douglas, and a shorter period in the office of Edward T.Mix, he started practice for himself in 1897, later established the firm of Leenhouts & Guthrie.
In their work the partners designed a class of work comprising varied type of buildings from factories to churches, notable examples of which were the Y.M.C.A. Building; Blackstone Apartments; Grand Avenue Methodist Church, and the Milwaukee House of Correction, built of monolithic concrete, completed in 1913.
Cornelius Leenhouts was associated in partnership with Hugh Guthrie for many years under the firm name of Leenhouts & Guthrie.
