The Angel in the House is a narrative poem by Coventry Patmore, first published in 1854 and expanded up until 1862. Although largely ignored upon publication, it became enormously popular during the later nineteenth century and its influence continued well into the twentieth. The poem was an idealised account of Patmore's courtship of his first wife, Emily, whom he believed to be the perfect woman.

He was born July 23, 1823, at Woodford, Essex. The eldest son of author Peter George, he was his father's intimate and constant companion and inherited from him his early literary enthusiasm. It was Coventry's ambition to become an artist.
Coventry Patmore was privately educated.
He showed much promise, earning the silver palette of the Society of Arts in 1838. In 1839 he was sent to school in France for six months, where he began to write poetry.
He published his first collection of verse, Poems, in 1844. This volume brought him into the circle that was to create the pre-Raphaelite movement. In 1846 he became an assistant librarian at the British Museum, a post he held for 19 years. He continued writing poems, publishing The Betrothal (1854), which formed the first part of The Angel in the House, a poem celebrating married love; other parts followed: The Espousals (1856), Faithful For Ever (1860), The Victories of Love (1862). Forty-six odes, of which nine had been privately printed in 1868, composed the volume The Unknown Eros (1877). Patmore also wrote essays and reviews, collected as Principle in Art (1889) and Religio Poetae (1893). He died at Lymington on Nov. 26, 1896.

In 1847 he married Emily Augusta Andrews and by 1851 they had had two sons, Coventry and Tennyson. Three daughters followed – Emily, Bertha and Gertrude, before their last child, a son (Henry John), was born in 1860.
In 1865 he remarried, his second wife being Marianne Byles. She died in 1880, and in 1881 he married Harriet Robson from Bletchingley in Surrey. They had a son Francis.
