Perks was born in Palmerston N.

Career

He played college golf at University of Oklahoma and University of Southwestern Louisiana in the United States. He turned professional in 1993 and played on the second tier Nike Tour for several seasons. He played the final three holes, a par 5, a par 3 and a par 4, in only 9 shots.

He was the 2002 New Zealand Sportsman of the Year.

After making only one cut on the Professional Golf Association Tour during 2006 and 2007, he announced his retirement in November 2007. After retiring, Perks became a commentator on The Golf Channel.

Achievements

• In 2002 he won The Players Championship, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the Professional Golf Association Tour. lieutenant was his only win on the Professional Golf Association Tour in 202 starts.

Membership

He became a member of the Professional Golf Association Tour after a tie for 35th in the 1999 Qualifying School earned him his tour card for the following season.
