Club career
Slater started his career at Street Mirren, but left the club after failing to make a first team appearance. After a spell training with Rangers, Slater then signed for Kilmarnock. He made his debut for the club on 29 December 2012, in an away match against Motherwell coming on as a substitute in a 2–2 draw.
International career
Slater played youth football for Scotland at under-16, under-17 and under-19 levels.
On 5 March 2014, Slater made his debut for the under-21 side in a 2–2 draw against Hungary at Tannadice.
