Cris Newport was born on July 14, 1960, in Melrose Park, Cook Country, Illinois, United States. He is a son of William Michael Newport, a business executive, and Beverly Ann (McCarty) Newport, a nurse.
In 1990 Cris Newport received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Massachusetts. In 1991 he obtained a Master of Arts in Teaching from the Tufts University.
In 1988 Cris Newport was a freelance book reviewer and editor. From 1991 to 1997 he was an associate professor of English at the New Hampshire Technical Institute (now NHTI, Concord's Community College) in Concord. In 1996 Newport was appointed a senior editor at the Pride Publications in Radnor, Ohio. Cris was also a managing editor of the Women of Power magazine. He was a co-creator and teacher at the Into Print & Beyond, a seminar on publishing.
