From 1913 to 1914 Curtis attended St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts, United States. Later, he studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France.
Curtis began his professional photographic career in Paris, France. After World War I he opened a studio in London, United Kingdom, in 1925. He remained in that city for the greater part of the next thirtyfour years, occasionally returning to New York, United States.
Also, he established his own interior decorating firm, Curtis Moffat, Inc., and designed furniture. As a painter, Moffat concentrated mainly on still lifes. He was a collector of Chinese objects and African sculpture. Experimenting a great deal with color, he also worked on photograms with Man Ray and took portraits of friends and various literati and artists for weekly magazines.
Curtis was influenced by Braque, De Chirico and Picasso.
