He is the creator of the Urbit computing platform and the author of the blog Unqualified Reservations. His writings have played a foundational role in the formation of the neoreactionary movement. He borrowed the word formalism from the concept of legal formalism to describe his political philosophy of insisting on the alignment of property rights with political power.
His opinions have been the subject of numerous controversies.
In 2009, Patri Friedman rescinded his invitation to speak at a conference hosted by the The Seasteading Institute after he accused another speaker, Paul Romer, of intellectual dishonesty. In 2015, his invitation to speak about Urbit at the Strange Loop conference was rescinded following complaints made by other attendees.
In 2016, his invitation to the LambdaConf conference resulted in the cancellation of the PrlConf and Typelevel Summit subconferences and the withdrawl of sponsors.
