Career
In 1906 he was elected the abbot of the community. He resigned in 1922 (Benedictine Monachism, Preface to Second Edition). Butler is known for The Vatican Council, his history of the First Vatican Council based on the correspondence of Bishop William Bernard Ullathorne, OSB, of Birmingham.
