Tebbel then completed a visual arts degree followed by a Communications degree at the University of Technology, Sydney.
She is currently a freelance journalist for a number of magazines and has written two books She started work as a writer for Vogue Australia from 1985 to 1987, leaving to become the editor of New Woman magazine. She is best known for putting plus-size models on the cover of New Woman magazine.
In 2000, she published her first book, The Body Snatchers: How the Media Shapes Women published by Finch.
