VHS: Run time 24 minutes. Produced and directed by Cynthia Salzman Mondell and Allen Mondell. Written by Cynthia Salzman Mondell. Featuring Irma Hall as Annie Mae Hunt and Donna Hightower as the voice of Grandma Tildy. Editor - Jim Ferguson. Based on the book I AM ANNIE MAE, collected and edited by Ruthe Winegarten from personal interviews with Annie Mae Hunt. Major funding provided in part by the Dallas WOmen's Foundation, City of Dallas / Office of Cultural Affairs and Southwest Alternate Media Project. The personal history of an extraordinary African American woman is told in her own words and illustrated with archival footage, skills and music. Actress Irma Hall portrays Annie Mae in a video that weaves a tale of intimate experiences with recollections of Annie Mae's grandmother and mother. Dramatically recounting memories from slavery to contemporary times, the story is both harsh and poignant, full of a rare spirit and joy and rich with the daily life experiences of black women. It is the story of the strengths, contributions and heartaches of one woman who can teach everyone a lesson about independence. "I say I'm me. I'm not educated. I can't go out there speakin' like Martin Luther King or Coretta King and them. I speak like me. When they ask me, I try to do it intelligently. Best I know how, that's all I can Do. That's when my son says, 'Mom, hyou sure have got guts'. -Annie Mae Hunt
