Mr. Collard was born in Paris, France, on December 19, 1957. He was born into a liberal, middle-class family.
Cyril Collard studied math and physics. He attended Lycée Hoche in Versailles, and pursued an engineering degree at Institut Industriel du Nord in Villeneuve d'Ascq, later known as École centrale de Lille before deciding to drop out.
Early in his career, Mr. Collard assisted fellow director Maurice Pialat and directed six music videos, as well as several television programs. Among the music videos he directed were those of French-Algerian band Carte de Séjour, whose lead singer Rachid Taha is one of the most famous rock-ethnic musicians in France today.
During the period 1987-1993 he worked as a freelance writer, film director, and actor. Cyril Collard wrote four books, the first of which, Condamne amour, was published in France in 1987. Mr. Collard is best-remembered, however, for stirring controversy with his 1989 work, Les Nuits fauves, which was eventually translated for readers of English as Savage Nights, and turned into an awardwinning film that Collard himself directed and starred in.
Mr. Collard's own experiences with AIDS undoubtedly influenced his work. He died of AIDS-related illness aged 35.

Cyril Collard is known for his unapologetic portrayals of bisexuality and HIV in art, particularly his autobiographical novel and film Les Nuits Fauves (Savage Nights). Openly bisexual, Mr. Collard was also one of the first French artists to speak openly about his HIV-positive status.
