Coote was a left-handed batsman who bowled left-arm medium pace. Coote played most of his cricket for Cambridgeshire in the Minor Counties Championship, where he made his debut for the county against Lincolnshire. From 1932 to 1949, he represented the county in 67 matches, with his final appearance coming against Lincolnshire.
Coote also played first-class cricket, where he represented a combined Minor Counties team, firstly in the 1935 against Cambridge University.
