After finishing college, Cyrill James worked as a teacher and was a member of the anti-colonialist "Beacon Group". When in Nelson,Lancashire, England , he worked as a cricket correspondent.James campaigned for the independence of the West Indies in Trinidad.Cyrill James was an active supporter of Pan-Africanism, and was appointed Chair of the International African Friends of Abyssinia ( later International African Friends of Ethiopia (IAFE)). In Trinidad he was the editor of The Nation newspaper for the pro-independence People's National Movement party.After 1968 he lectured at the University of the District of Columbia.
