He played college football at the University of Illinois and was drafted in the second round of the 1968 NFL Draft. During his junior year at Illinois, he was declared permanently ineligible by the Big Ten Conference on March 4, 1967 for having more than United States $500 in expenses per year paid for by money from a slush fund set up by the university"s athletic department.
