The Revenger's Tragedy is an intense tragic burlesque. Its hero, Vindice, desires to avenge the death of his betrothed. Operating in disguises he provokes discord among his enemies so that they plot against each other. This play depicts a morally corrupt world where the desire for justice is contaminated by the obsession for revenge. The characters take pleasure in watching adultery, incest and murder. The play's chief moral spokesman, Vindice, is at the same time enamoured of and disgusted by, the luxury of the court

The earliest known fact of his life is that in 1600 he published The Transformed Metamorphosis, a satirical allegorical poem. He became secretary to Sir Francis Vere, English general in the Netherlands, in whose memory he wrote A Funeral Poem in 1609. His play The Atheist's Tragedy was published in 1611, and The Nobleman, now lost, was acted in 1612. Tourneur wrote The Character of Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, and A Grief on the Death of Prince Henry.
After carrying government dispatches to Brussels in 1613, he held military office under Sir Edward Cecil and the States of Holland. The Privy Council imprisoned him briefly in 1617 but in 1625 appointed him secretary to the council of war on Cecil's expedition against Cadiz. Tourneur became ill during the voyage and died at Kinsdale, Ireland, on Feb. 28, 1626.
The Revenger's Tragedy, a masterpiece of Jacobean drama, has been attributed to Tourneur, but without adequate evidence. Published anonymously in 1607, it was assigned to Tourneur by later booksellers, but some scholars believe Thomas Middleton was its author. Tourneur's play, The Atheist's Tragedy, expresses a Christian stoicism very different from the imaginative passion of The Revenger's Tragedy.
