Cyrus K. Porter was born in 1836 in Cicero (Onandago county) New York, United States.
He began work as apprentice to a "joiner" (carpenter). After following that trade for several years, he took up architectural study, and in 1885 opened an office for practice in Brantford (Ontario) Canada. Ten years later he returned to the U. S. to settle in Buffalo.
Mr. Porter's early works were designed in collaboration with a Mr. Wilcox, and when that association was terminated, he maintained an independent office until joined by his two sons, Cyrus K. (died 1938) and Jesse (died 1929), in organizing the firm of Cyrus K. Porter & Sons. As senior member of the firm Mr. Porter was active in practice through his remaining years, well known professionally in Buffalo. Among the noteworthy buildings in the city planned in his office was Trinity Church, St. Patrick's Church, the new Municipal Building, and the first building erected on the campus of the Buffalo University.
Porter had two sons Jesse R. Porter and Cyrus K. Porter; and three daughters, Edna M. Porter, Hermoine T. Porter and Minnie K. Porter.
