(Excerpt from Hearts and the Highway This story is exactl...)
Excerpt from Hearts and the Highway This story is exactly what it purports to be, a romance, as the reader who cares to follow the Highway with the Hero and Heroine whose adventures thereon are hereafter set forth will see. It makes no pretence at being an historical novel, and yet, perhaps, it is only fair to the Manes of Lady Grizel Ogilby to point out that she herself once played a dashing role, somewhat like that attributed to Lady Katharine Clanranald, in a similar emergency in Scottish history and at a similar crisis in the family fortunes. I am just a little tired, for the nonce, of the problem story, and I have turned to this with a keen relish in which I humbly trust the reader will share. Variety is the life of literature: if I confined myself to one kind of books, or to one kind of sermons, I should be a dead author and a dead preacher as well. The relaxations of life are not to be found in idleness, but in doing things that are different. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (A selection of frontier and naval adventures This is the...)
A selection of frontier and naval adventures This is the sixth book in Cyrus Townsend Brady's 'Fights and Fighters' series. It follows Brady's sometimes idiosyncratic approach to his project of fascinating insights into conflict and is divided into two broad sections. The first focuses on the drama that was the conquest of Central and South America, with emphasis on Panama and Balboa but also touching on Pizarro and Peru. The second part is an exciting selection of 'adventures;' featured are the account of the whaling ship Essex, the cruise of the Tonquin, a piece about the American hero John Paul Jones, an interesting account of Indian fighting along the Pitt River by the U. S. Army under Crook in 1868 and finally an account of boyhood in the West told in the first person. This series contains essential information for those interested in the conflicts fought on the American frontiers. The volumes in the 'Fights and Fighters' series are: 1. Colonial, 2. Revolutionary, 3. Border, 4. Indian, 5. North-Western and 6. South American. All have been or will soon be published by Leonaur. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

WHETHER General Custer did, or did not, obey General Terry's orders; whether these orders were, or were not, well considered, and such as could be carried out; whether, if General Custer did disobey General Terry's orders he was warranted in so doing by the circumstances in which he found himself, are questions of the deepest interest to the student of military matters and the historian thereof. I presume the problem they present will never be authoritatively settled, and that men will continue to differ upon these questions until the end of time. The matter has been discussed, pro and con, at great length on many occasions. A number of books and magazine articles have been written upon different phases of the situation. I have come to the conclusion indicated in my own article, as I said, against my wish. In view of his heroic death in the high places of the field, I would fain hold General Custer, for whom I have long cherished an admiration which I still retain, entirely innocent. I have only come to this conclusion after a rigid investigation including the careful weighing of such evidence as I could secure upon every point in question. This evidence consists, first, of a great variety of printed matter; second, of personal conversations with soldiers and military critics, which, as any record of it would necessarily be hearsay and secondhand, I have not set down hereafter save in one instance; third, of let * All notes in this appendix are signed by the initials of their writers to identify them.--C. (Excerpt from South American Fights and Fighters: And Othe...)
Excerpt from South American Fights and Fighters: And Other Tales of Adventure The first part of this new volume of the American Fights and Fighters Series needs no special introduction. Partly to make this the same size as the other books, but more particularly because I especially desired to give a permanent place to some of the most dramatic and interesting episodes in our history - especially as most of them related to the Pacific and the Far West - the series of papers in part second was included. "The Yarn of the Essex, Whaler" is abridged from a quaint account written by the Mate and published in an old volume which is long since out of print and very scarce. The papers on the Tonquin, John Paul Jones, and "The Great American Duellists" speak for themselves. The account of the battle of the Pitt River has never been published in book form heretofore. The last paper "On Being a Boy Out West" I inserted because I enjoy it myself, and because I have found that others young and old who have read it generally like it also. "When we had passed the bridge, the Señor Muteczuma came out to receive us, attended by about two hundred nobles, all barefooted, and dressed in livery, or a peculiar garb of fine cotton, richer than is usually worn; they came in two processions in close proximity to the houses on each side of the street, which is very wide and beautiful, and so straight that you can see from one end of it to the other, although it is two-thirds of a league in length, having on both sides large and elegant houses and temples. Muteczuma came through the centre of the street, attended by two lords, one upon his right and the other upon his left hand, one of whom was the same nobleman who, as I have mentioned, came to meet me in a litter, and the other was the brother of Muteczuma, lord of the city of Iztapalapa, which I had left the same day; all three were dressed in the same manner, except that Muteczuma wore shoes, while the others were without them.

While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. (The American Indian Wars, or Indian Wars, were the multip...)
The American Indian Wars, or Indian Wars, were the multiple conflicts between American settlers or the United States government and the native peoples of North America from the time of earliest colonial settlement until 1924. In some cases, wars resulted from conflicts and competition for resources between the European colonists and Native Americans. There was population pressure as settlers expanded their territory, generally pushing indigenous people northward and westward. Warfare and raiding also took place as a result of wars between European powers; in North America, these enlisted their Native American allies to help them conduct warfare against each other's settlements. Many conflicts were local, involving disputes over land use, and some entailed cycles of reprisal. Particularly in later years, conflicts were spurred by ideologies such as Manifest Destiny, which held that the United States was destined to expand from coast to coast on the North American continent. In the 1830s, the United States had a policy of Indian removal east of the Mississippi River, which was a planned, large-scale removal of indigenous peoples from the areas where Europeans were settling. Particularly in the years leading up to Congressional passage of the related act, there was armed conflict between settlers and Native Americans; some removal was achieved through sale or exchange of territory through treaties.

(The great clash between the U.S Army and the Plains India...)
The great clash between the U.S Army and the Plains Indian tribes Everyone who has been fascinated by the history of the American western frontier has much for which to thank Cyrus Townsend Brady, the author of this book. Brady was a prolific author of both fiction and non fiction and in both genres his abiding interest and knowledge of the history of his own country is a well demonstrated. This book, 'Indian Fights and Fighters,' captivated readers upon its publication and its success made the series of which it was part highly popular, although it was the fourth, not the first in his 'American Fights and Fighters Series.' Several more 'Fights and Fighters' books, based upon similar themes, followed. Brady relates-with some scholarship and with the help of maps, plans and illustrations-the principal engagements of the Plains Indian Wars in the period after the Civil War. The book draws on the first hand accounts of many of the people who were involved and is notable for bringing before the reader accounts by those who had not previously been published. Herein is a veritable cornucopia of western incident, campaigns, battles, fights and massacres, the full list of which is too numerous to catalogue here. They include the Fetterman Massacre, the Wagon Box Fight, Beecher's Island, the Fight on Beaver Creek, the Washita, the Rosebud and many, many more. This book has become an invaluable, highly regarded and enduring classic of the History of the West. Available in softcover and hardcover with dustjacket for collectors.

( Originally published in 1904, Indian Fights and Fighter...)
Originally published in 1904, Indian Fights and Fighters regularly appears in bibliographies of significant works on the history of the American West. Embracing almost three decades of Plains history, it contains not only Brady's clear, fast-paced accounts of the Plains wars, but also a number of eyewitness accounts, most of which were written especially for him and which are almost impossible to find elsewhere. The Powder River Expedition, the tragedy at Fort Phil Kearny, the Wagon Box Fight, the defense of Beecher's Island, the Fetterman Massacre, the battles of Washita and Summit Springs, and the campaigns of Crook, Custer, and Miles against the Sioux all are fully treated. The introduction by James T. King sketches Brady's career and evaluates his sources.

(• Two of American author Cyrus Townsend Brady’s romantic ...)
• Two of American author Cyrus Townsend Brady’s romantic adventure books are bound together in this Kindle edition: The Island of Regeneration (1818) and Chalice of Courage (1912) The Island of Regeneration, A Story of What Ought To Be (1888) A young woman is cast ashore on an uninhabited Pacific island – alone until she finds a man who is unable to speak and a savage who may be European. Chalice of Courage, A Romance of Colorado (1912) Before hearing the sharp scream he'd given no thought to the sheer fall to the river a thousand feet beneath the narrow ledge of the trail. But the scream belonged to a woman. She should have been dead a thousand times, but yet she was alive when he found her. She had only one wish: Kill me." That was her only plea. About The Author Pennsylvania-born American author Cyril Townsend Brady (1861 –1920) was a journalist, historian and adventure writer, best known for "Indian Fights and Fighters". He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and was a deacon in the Episcopal church. Other books by Cyril Townsend Brady: Eagle of the Empire, A Story of Waterloo (1915) Napoleon's genius cannot be denied any more than his failure. In this book – part romance, part history and military – American author Cyrus Townsend Brady seeks to show him at his best and also almost at his worst. For sheer brilliance, military and mental, the campaigning in France in 1814 could not be surpassed. This story was written just before the outbreak of the World War I and published in 1915 while it was in full course. The old principles remain unchanged today -- over the fields upon which Napoleon marched and fought, armies have again marched and fought. And great Captains are still studying Frederick, Wellington and Bonaparte as they have ever done.

(The Bloody years of the birth of a nation The inexorabl...)
The Bloody years of the birth of a nation The inexorable drive westward was to be the course of the American nation until it had firmly established itself from the Atlantic to the Pacific. For many, however, 'the West' has come to mean the great plains of the interior with their herds of buffalo and mounted and feathered Indian tribes like the Sioux and Cheyenne. No less interesting is the period when the dangerous frontier between settlements and the wilderness with all its perils lay in what is now consider the eastern part of the USA. The period around the closing stages of the Revolutionary Wars of the 18th century and the turn of the 19th century was especially turbulent and is the subject of this book. Within these pages are accounts of Bouquet and the action at Bushy Run, Sam Brady the Ranger, Ferguson and Kings Mountain, Boone, the heroism of Bryan's station and the tragedy of Blue Licks, the bloody conflicts with the Red Stick Creeks of Alabama and the fierce Indians of the Florida Everglades, the Seminoles. Border Fights & Fighters contains riveting and rarely told accounts of George Rogers Clark, the great Tecumseh, George Croghan, the massacre on Raisin River and the heroic defence of Fort Stephenson. Brady's third volume in his American Fights and Fighters series concludes with the retelling of the struggle for the creation of the Texas Republic, of Travis, Crockett, Huston, the iconic Alamo and victory at San Jacinto. Those familiar with Brady's writing will be pleased to learn that this volume is one of his best and will be a highly rewarding reading experience for those interested in frontier America. (The conflicts of backwoods and high seas This book, tho...)
The conflicts of backwoods and high seas This book, though not the first published in the series, is chronologically the first in Brady's essential cycle of books on the fights and fighters of the American nation. It includes the adventures of the early explorers of the North American continent including De Soto and the trials of the Huguenot colonies. No account of the period should ignore the rapacious activities of the 'Gentlemen of the Black Flag,' Sir Henry Morgan and other pirates who plied their deadly trade under the Jolly Roger. The 18th century saw a decisive confrontation between Britain and France over no less an issue than which of those powers would dominate the globe in terms of language, culture, influence and trade. Though the conflict was a global one, skirmishes and battles fought in the backwoods and mountains and on the lakes of the New World became known as the French and Indian War, so called because both sides could call on fierce native American tribes of the Eastern Woodlands-the Iroquois and Huron nations respectively-in support of their cause. The story of this war is compellingly recounted here, from the early days of disaster to Ticonderoga and the final defeat of the French under Montcalm by the British under Wolfe at Quebec. Brady's series is regarded as a classic and these new Leonaur editions make it available, in its entirety, to modern readers and libraries. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Not illustrated. 1901 Excerpt: ...an English spy. They would have hanged him in spite of his protestations of the falsity of Oglethorpe's letter, had not Don Manuel, who entertained some doubt as to the reports, interfered to save his life. The situation of the Spaniards, however, was such that when word was brought them that three ships--South Carolina scouting vessels--had been seen in the offing, supposing them to indicate the approach of the English fleet, they were filled with terror. Sick, hungry, thirsty, dispirited, they set fire to the fort and, abandoning large quantities of stores and supplies, including their guns, they piled aboard their ships and sailed away. There was no English fleet anywhere near the scene of action and none was coming; no ships were menacing St. Augustine, either. Oglethorpe at once surmised that they would stop at Fort William and endeavor to strike one effective blow there. He sent expresses, therefore, to the young commander and bade him hold out at all hazards. For two days Ensign Stewart and sixty men sustained a vigorous attack from the Spaniards, whom they finally repulsed. Oglethorpe had followed in the wake of the retreating ships with his own small vessels and annoyed them as much as he could. Shortly after the middle of July the Spaniards abandoned their expedition and the whole armada left the coast, never to return. The celebrated Whitefield, who was with Oglethorpe at the time, said of the results of the campaign, " The deliverance of Georgia is such as cannot be paralleled save by some of the incidents of the Old Testament." When the smallness of his force and the overwhelming strength of the Spaniards is considered, the student of history must agree with the theologian. Oglethorpe's defence had been brilliant in the extreme. He ha...

(The transition between her state of yesterday and that of...)
The transition between her state of yesterday and that of to-day was as great as if she had been born into morning from the womb of midnight. Like a young animal vaguely stirring she drank in life blindly with closed eyes. She could hear the thunderous roaring of the breakers crashing upon the barrier reef. A lone her boat had been wrecked in the darkness of the night before the noise softened and, mellowed by distance, came to her in a deep, low accompaniment to the sharper and nearer sounds of the birds singing and the breeze rustling gently through the long leaves of the trees overhead. The dry sand on which she lay was soft and yielding and made a comfortable bed for her tired body, racked with weary days in the constraint and narrowness of a small boat. It was hot, too. "Mr. Sempland," he began with impressive and deliberate gravity, carefully weighing his words that they might make the deeper impression upon the younger man, for whom he felt profound pity, "you bear one of the noblest names in the commonwealth. I knew your father and your grandfather. They were men of the highest courage and of unimpeachable honor. Their devotion to the South cannot be questioned. I grieve more than I can say to find you in so equivocal a position. I am convinced that there is some explanation for it, and I ask you, not as your general, but as your friend, to disclose it to me."

Excerpt from American Fights and Fighters Series Indian Fights and Fighters The writing of history requires three operations: (I) The collection of facts; (II) The classification and arrangement of facts; (III) The presentation and discussion of facts. I have collected the facts related in this book from every source open to me. These sources may be divided into two groups: (1) Published and (2) unpublished, matter. The published matter includes (a) official records; (b) books, and (c) magazine or other ephemeral articles. The unpublished matter includes (a) letters and (b) verbal communications. I have made use of all these sources of information in gathering the facts. A list of some of the printed authorities consulted follows this preface. ("The tragic interlude" in this little war-time comedy of ...)
"The tragic interlude" in this little war-time comedy of the affections really happened as I have described it. The men who went to their death beside the _Housatonic_ in Charleston harbor were Lieutenant George F. Dixon of the Twenty-first Alabama Infantry, in command; Captain J. F. Carlson of Wagoner's Battery; and Seamen Becker, Simpkins, Wicks, Collins, and Ridgway of the Confederate Navy, all volunteers. These names should be written in letters of gold on the roll of heroes. No more gallant exploit was ever performed. The qualities and characteristics of that death trap, the _David_, were well known to everybody. The history of former attempts to work her is accurately set down in the text of the story. Dixon and his men should be remembered with Decatur, Cushing, Nields, and Hobson. The torpedo boat was found after the war lying on the bottom of the harbor, about one hundred feet from the wreck of the _Housatonic_, with her bow pointing toward the sloop of war and with every man of her crew dead at his post,--just as they all expected. I shall be happy if this novel serves to call renewed attention to this splendid exhibition of American heroism. Had they not fought for a cause which was lost they would still be remembered, as, in any event, they ought to be. For the rest, here is a love story in which the beautiful Southern girl does not espouse the brave Union soldier, or the beautiful Northern girl the brave Southern soldier. They were all Southern, all true to the South, and they all stayed so except Admiral Vernon, and he does not count.

Here is the 408 pg stated 12th Impression privately owned hardcover by Cyrus Brady with illustrations by George Wright with vignettes by Louis Arata from Charles Scribners Sons and copyrighted 1906. This is novel on the Civil War as seen through eyes of Boyd Peyton, midshipman in the United States Navy. The book has no dust cover and thus the red boards with white embossed block lettering and Naval design have a rub/light stain and a bit corner/edge wear, yet are overall intact and presentable. Inside, there is a former owners inscription to the front fly leaf and a small chip to the upper edge of that same page. Otherwise, aside from light foxing to the fanned page ends/end papers, the pages are clean, tear free and the binding is sound.
