From 1895 till 1899 he was a partner of Townsend & Co. Chemulpo (Korea). From 1899 tll 1906 Deshler worked as an assistant treasure at Oriental Consolidated Mining Co. Chemulpo (Korea). Starting from 1907 to 1909 he was the owner of Deshler Steamer Line. From 1910 till 1918 D. W. worked as a purchasing agent at Standard Oil Company of N.Y. Shanghai. Also, in 1918 he took up a post of a purchasing agent at China Medical Board, Rockefeller Foundation (Beijing).
