Daiei Kaneko was born in Niigata Prefecture in Japan.
After graduating from Shinshu University (1904) made a deep study of Western philosophy.
Daiei Kaneko wrote a book titled "An Introduction to Buddhism," in which he attempted to prove that Buddhism was founded on the tenets of Shinshu. Though this book was appreciated in philosophical circles it was criticized by the traditional schools of religion. Later he compromised with the religious bodies and was appointed professor at Otani University (1941), of which he is now Professor Emeritus. Is also priest of the Higashi Honganji school of Shinshu.
