Sanders was educated at The Hemel Hempstead School. He gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of York followed by a Doctor of Philosophy from Darwin College, Cambridge in 1978.

Sanders specialist area is membrane transport and signal transduction in plants as well as the mechanisms of heavy metal and calcium transport. Following his Doctor of Philosophy, Sanders did five years of postdoctoral research at Yale School of Medicine, Yale University. Before moving to Norwich, he was Head of the Department of Biology at the University of New York
In 2014, under his directorship, the John Innes Centre established new collaborations with the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
