O'Donoghue attended Mercyhurst University where he played four seasons of NCAA Division I hockey with the Mercyhurst Lakers, who competes in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA).

He is currently under contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL). In his senior year, O'Donoghue's outstanding play was rewarded when he was selected to the 2013–14 Second All-Conference Team and was named the AHA's Top Defensive Forward. On April 11, 2014, the Phoenix Coyotes of the NHL signed O'Donoghue as an undrafted free agent to a two-year entry-level contract.
During the 2015–16 season, O'Donoghue was included in a trade by the Coyotes alongside Dustin Jeffrey and James Melindy to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Matia Marcantuoni on February 29, 2016. He was directly assigned the ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers.
