Dana Hart-Stone was born in 1956, in Billings, Montana, United States.
Dana Hart-Stone developed an interest in anthropology at an early age. As a child, he explored Eastern Montana to find the material traces of the life of its past residents. The hobby had a great impact on the concept of his further artworks.
From 1974 to 1976, Hart-Stone studied at Montana State University. He spent a couple of following years at the University of Montana, Missoula.
In 1995, Hart-Stone entered San Francisco State University graduating two years later with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
The start of Dana Hart-Stone’s artistic career can be counted from the end of the 1970s when he had one of his first solo shows. Since then, he has taken part in both solo and group exhibitions around the United States, including the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, San Francisco Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Richmond Art Center, South Bend Regional Museum of Art, and the University Gallery, University of Montana, Missoula to name but a few.
The repetitive technique used by Dana Hart-Stone to construct his works is the digital imitation of the patterns from the upholstery fabrics and other textiles. In a narrower sense, it symbolizes the continuity of our collective historical past that is composed of the past of individual persons.
The genre of each work depends on the distance from which the piece is seen. The remoteness makes them work as abstract and the nearness turns them into realistic pieces.
