(In this impassioned book, Dana Mack exposes a disturbing ...)
In this impassioned book, Dana Mack exposes a disturbing aspect of American society. Embedded in the very institutions that are supposed to be helping parents in the difficult enterprise of childrearing is a pronounced anti-family bent. Despite the fuss over family values, Mack argues, we're living in an increasingly family hating culture that offers little respect or support for parents that in fact undermines their efforts at a time when they are working harder than ever to raise their children right. Parental autonomy has been supplanted by the tyranny of so-called experts in psychology, education, law, and social science. Under their sway, the very institutions that could help parents to shore up their embattled authority schools, courts, social service agencies, even religious institutions actively thwart them instead.

Dana Mack received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from the University of California. She also obtained a Master of Arts degree and a Master of Philosophy degree in European history from Columbia University.
Dana Mack is particularly known as the author of the book, The Assault on Parenthood: How Our Culture Undermines the Family, and as the co-editor of The Book of Marriage: The Wisest Answers to the Toughest Questions. In The Assault on Parenthood (1997), she focuses on how the notion of family has been devalued. A "cult of professional expertise" has risen over the last three decades, according to Mack, guiding social reform and legislation in a direction that removes parents as the primary nurturing influences in their children's lives. Mack charts the development of the "familism" movement, a grass-roots response by parents who seek to improve relationships with their children while minimizing their children's exposure to cultural influences hostile to the family.
Mack and David Blankenhorn are coeditors of The Book of Marriage: The Wisest Answers to the Toughest Questions (2001), an anthology that includes advice from the Bible to Bill Cosby. The ten sections address such questions as why get married at all, what are couples promising, and can love last a lifetime. She also wrote articles on cultural, historical, educational and family topics for such publications as The Wall Street Journal, The New Criterion, Commentary, the Christian Science Monitor, and The Washington Post, among many others. Previously she has been holding the position of the researcher at the Center for Education Studies in New York City, New York, United States.
From 2001 she maintains an active piano studio, teaching students from the ages of seven to sixty. She is a gubernatorial appointee to the Connecticut Humanities Council, on whose board she is now serving her second term. She is the publicity and public relations director for Candlelight Concerts as well.
