Dames represented the Griquas side at the 2004 Craven Week tournament in Nelspruit. He then moved to Potchefstroom, where he played for the Leopards U19 side in 2005 and for the Leopards U21 side in 2006, before joining Durban-based side the Natal Sharks, where he played for the Sharks U21 side in 2007.

He made his senior bow in 2008, playing for the Sharks" Vodacom Cup side, the Natal Wildebeest in the 2008 Vodacom Cup competition, his debut coming in their match against the Pumas in Durban.
