Daniel Christopher Allison is a British-born orthopedic surgeon practicing in Los Angeles, California, known for musculoskeletal oncology and complex hip and knee reconstruction. He holds academic appointments in orthopedic surgery and has contributed to peer-reviewed orthopedic literature and a patented retractor system for direct anterior hip replacement.
Background
Allison was born in 1975 in London, England, which was then the capital of the United Kingdom and its largest city. He was the son of Berti Gibbons Allison, and his stepfather was Robert Anderson.
His higher education took place in Texas, first at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and later at Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University in Houston.
Education
Allison earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and is recorded as a cum laude graduate of the institution. SMU was chartered on April 17, 1911, by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, now part of the United Methodist Church, in partnership with Dallas civic leaders. Classes began in 1915, and the university is today a private research university.
He then studied medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, which was founded in Dallas in 1900 as the University of Dallas Medical Department. The school moved to Houston in 1943 to join the newly formed Texas Medical Center and became independent of Baylor University in 1969. Allison received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the college in 2002.
He also completed a Master of Business Administration at Rice University in 2002, through the joint MBA and MD program that Rice operated with Baylor College of Medicine. The Rice business school was established in 1974 as the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management and was renamed the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business in 2009.
Allison's postgraduate training took place at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County General Hospital. He completed a combined orthopaedic and general surgery internship, an orthopaedic surgery residency from 2002 to 2007, and a musculoskeletal oncology fellowship. The University of Southern California is a private research university in Los Angeles, and its medical training is associated with the Keck School of Medicine. Los Angeles County General Hospital was a public teaching hospital operated by Los Angeles County.
From 2007 he served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Orthopaedics at USC, and he is later recorded as an associate clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery there. In 2009 he also served as treasurer. Between 2008 and 2012 he was chief of pediatric orthopedic oncology at Los Angeles County General Hospital. From 2008 to 2011 he was assistant director of adult and pediatric orthopedic oncology at the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, the physician organization of Kaiser Permanente in Southern California.
He was assistant director of orthopedic oncology at the USC Keck Medical Center from 2011 to 2012. He also holds the role of co-director of pediatric orthopedic oncology at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, a pediatric hospital in the city. Children's Hospital Los Angeles is a pediatric hospital with a long history of specialized children's care.
From 2012 he has been an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a nonprofit academic medical center in Los Angeles, where he is assistant director of orthopedic oncology. His editorial work includes membership of the editorial board of Global Journal Surgery, a journal based in Tiruchirappalli, India, since 2010. His clinical focus covers musculoskeletal oncology, complex hip and knee reconstruction, and the direct anterior approach to hip replacement.
Allison is among a small number of surgeons who perform the direct anterior approach to hip replacement. He designed a retractor system that facilitates this approach on a standard operating table, and he holds a U.S. patent for it.
He has authored 15 peer-reviewed journal articles and five book chapters on orthopaedic surgery, and he is a frequent guest speaker at orthopaedic society meetings.
