Assistant Engineer on Waterloo and City Railway and on Central London Railway during their construction. Sent to East Africa by Foreign Office, 1898, where exjflored, and made part of survey through Mau Mountains for Uganda Railway. From Uganda went to South Africa, 1900, and was posted as Lieut, to 4th Yeomanry Regiment.
Captain commanding Leicester Squadron, 1901. Served till end of war (Queen’s medal, five clasps). Joined North Nigeria Regiment, 1903.
Took part in operations in Sept, and October 1903 (twice in action). Was in fighting at Sar Tiru near Sokoto, 1905 (wounded, despatches, Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, and African general service medal). Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1907; F.R.G.S; Captain and Company Commander in Mounted Infantry, North Nigeria Regiment.
