Daniel Martín Vega is a Spanish zoologist and scientist specializing in forensic and applied entomology. A professor at the University of Alcalá, he studies carrion insects, insect development, species identification, and their applications in forensic and health sciences.
Background
Daniel Martín Vega was born in Spain on 1 June 1980. His professional and academic career has been associated with the University of Alcalá, where he developed his research in zoology, forensic entomology, and the biology of necrophagous insects.
Education
Martín Vega studied Biology at the University of Alcalá, completing his degree in 2004. He continued his postgraduate training at the same university in Zoology and Physical Anthropology and earned a doctorate in Biology in 2011. His doctoral dissertation, Estudio de los agregados de dípteros sarcosaprófagos y su relación con los ecosistemas naturales de la Comunidad de Madrid, examined carrion-associated Diptera assemblages across natural ecosystems in the Community of Madrid and was supervised by Arturo Baz Ramos.
Career
Martín Vega has pursued an academic and research career at the University of Alcalá in the fields of zoology and applied entomology. His research has focused on necrophagous insects, forensic entomology, insect biology, species identification, carrion ecology, and the medical and veterinary significance of insects. His doctoral research documented the composition, diversity, seasonality, and habitat relationships of sarcosaprophagous Diptera in central Spain, including records of three Piophilidae species new to the Iberian fauna. He later developed research on insect development, morphology, molecular identification, carrion-insect ecology, and applications to the estimation of the postmortem interval. At the University of Alcalá he has taught zoology, animal anatomy, sanitary entomology, forensic entomology, external placements, and undergraduate dissertation courses. He became Professor Titular de Universidad in the area of Zoology in 2024 and has also held academic leadership responsibilities in the Faculty of Sciences, including service as vice-dean and deputy dean for Health Biology.
Achievements
Completed a doctoral dissertation on sarcosaprophagous Diptera assemblages and their relationship with the natural ecosystems of the Community of Madrid at the University of Alcalá in 2011.
Documented three Piophilidae species—Piophila megastigmata, Prochyliza nigricornis, and Thyreophora cynophila—as new records for the Iberian fauna in doctoral research on carrion-associated Diptera.
