McStay was recruited from the Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup with pick 25 in the 2013 American Federation of Labor-Congress Draft. McStay made his American Federation of Labor-Congress debut against the North Melbourne Football Club in Round 15, 2014, playing at centre half-back.
