Sargent was born in Gloucester, Master of Arts (March 18 1730-February 18 1806) to Colonel Epes Sargent and Ester McCarty daughter of Florence McCarty.

He was a very successful merchant who was referred to as the "merchant prince". They had six son"s Daniel Sargent, Ignatius Sargent, John Turner Sargent, Henry Sargent, Winthrop Sargent and Lucius Manlius Sargent.
