Background

Smith, Daniel was born on October 28, 1748 in Stafford County, Virginia, United States. Son of Henry and Sarah (Crosby) Smith.

Education

Attended College William and Mary.

Career

Deputy surveyor, 1773. Justice of peace, 1776. Aided in organization Washington County, Virginia, 1777, became major county militia.

A surveyor who extended boundary between Virginia and North Carolina, 1779 (established disputed Walker’s Line). High sheriff Augusta County, 1780. Colonel militia, 1781.

Moved to Cumberland Settlements (now part of Tennessee), 1783. Director for laying out Town of Nashville (Tennessee), 1784. Trustee Davidson Academy, 1785.

Brigadier general Mero District (North Carolina) Militia, 1788. Member North Carolina Convention that ratified United States Constitution, 1789. Secretary territory southwest of Ohio River, 1790.
