(There is in America a tradition of religious involvement ...)
There is in America a tradition of religious involvement in the shaping of public social policy. Today, official representatives of all faiths continue to address a whole lexicon of concerns such as welfare reform, gun control, human rights, euthanasia, and abortion. The authors describe the actual policy making structures within the Catholic and Jewish communities. They address important questions such as: When is an issue crucial enough to demand a position? What kind of reflection precedes a formal statement? What stance is to be taken in the statement consciousness raising, reform, or healing? Whose testimony is sought for authentic presentation of the religious tradition as well as for an accurate assessment of the social issue under consideration? These and other questions are raised in the context of actual Catholic and Jewish positions on family policy, national economic policy, and international human rights. Eugene Fisher is executive secretary of the Secretariat for Catholic-Jewish Relations, National Conference of Catholic Bishops. Daniel F. Polish is the associate executive vice-president of the Synagogue Council of America.
