Practiced in Chicopee, Massachusetts, until 1857.
Farmer, Ogle Company, Illinois, 1857-1860. In real estate business in Chicago, 1860-1887. Retired from business but remained director in Chicago City Railway Company and other corporations Alderman, Chicago, 1873-1876.
Made donations aggregating over $4,000,000 to colls. and charities, including $280,000 to Chicago Theological Seminary, and $600,000 to Beloit College, to which he has added others during past 2 years. $150,000 to Mount Holyoke College. $100,000 to Lake Forest U. and other donations to 30 colls. in 20 different states, coupling each gift with the requirement that a larger sum be raised from other sources before his gift becomes available.
Final gift, his home at Hinsdale, Illinois, to that village for public library and museum.
