Career

Practiced law, Charleston, South Carolina., circa 1833. Organized, edited several periodicals including Southern Literary Journal and Magazine of Arts, Charleston, 1835-1837, Whitaker’s Magazine, 1841-1861, Southern Quarterly Review, New Orleans, 1842-1847, New Orleans Monthly Review, 1874-1876. Held governmental position during Buchanan’s administration, 1857-1861.

Employed by Post Office Department, Confederate Government. Frequent contributor to National Intelligencer, Washington, District of Columbia, Charleston Courier, New Orleans Times, contributed his best work to Southern Quarterly Review. Secretary local academic of sciences, New Orleans.

Joined St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, New Orleans, 1878.
