Daniel Moreau Barringer, American mining engineer, geologist.


Barringer, Daniel Moreau was born on May 25, 1860 in Raleigh, North Carolina, United States. Son of Honorary Daniel Moreau and Elizabeth (Wethered) Barringer.


Bachelor of Arts, Princeton, 1879, A.M., 1882. Bachelor of Laws, University of Pennsylvania, 1882. Special course in geology, Harvard, 1889, in chemistry and mineralogy, University of Virginia, 1890.


Practiced law with brother, 1882-1889. Consultant mining engineer and geologist, since 1890. President and director of several mining companies Trustee Jefferson Medical College and Hospital.


  • Author: The Law of Mines and Mining in the United States, 1907. Minerals of Commercial Value, 1907. Discovered origin of Meteor Crater, 4,200 feet in diameter and 570 feet deep (to visible floor), in Northern Central Arizona, 1905, and “proved that it is due to impact of a meteoric mass, probably a compact cluster of iron meteorites”.


Married Margaret Bennett, October 20, 1897. Children: Brandon, Daniel Moreau, Sarah Drew, John Paul, Elizabeth Wethered, Lewin Bennitt, Richard Wethered, Philip Ellicott.
