In this sequel to In The Heart of Things, Robert Llewellen is back in Miami, his hometown, at ground zero, feeling his "inner self becoming cluttered with the illusion of enlightenment. . ." In Baltimore, Llewellen's life had been radically changed by the ideas of Jansen, a Zen practitioner who undertook to help him penetrate into the heart of things. He thought he understood Jansen's message, but in trying to practice it, he finds that he is unintentionally hurting the friends he is trying to help. Somehow, he must find out what it was in Jansen's message that he missed.

This is the concluding work of the Llewellen trilogy, which began with In the Heart of Things and continued with Into the Ashes. Robert Llewellen is living in Norfolk, Virginia, living alone, working as a firefighter, living with his memories of his earlier life. Then two things happen. He meets an extraordinary woman named Sandy, and his old friend Fish arrives at his door, mortally ill, asking only for a place to die. Llewellen is once again faced with love and death and the meaning of life.

( Jesus did not die alone. He died in the company of wome...)
Jesus did not die alone. He died in the company of women, and in the presence of John's silence. Yet, this silence of one brother disciple resounds more loudly than all the lamentations of sister disciples, who loved and followed and took care of Jesus, before and after his death. The power of this silence demonstrates and reinforces the cultural exclusion of women: their contributions to a new religious spirit, their loving support during his life, their heartfelt presence at his crucifixion, their tender care after his death, and their believing witness after his resurrection. Through the women of Palestine, Lliteras brings to life the love and the sorrow, the loyalty and the sacrifice of sister disciples, who were present before, during, and after Jesus' crucifixion on Golgotha, and who still claim that presence to this day.

( Exceptional new fiction from the author of The Thieves ...)
Exceptional new fiction from the author of The Thieves of Golgotha and the Llewellen trilogy. History characterizes Judas as the disciple who betrayed Jesus. In this magnificent study of the conflict between human desires and destiny, Lliteras artfully scrapes away two thousand years of myth to reveal Judas the man: the depth of his agony over his actions, and the intricate nature of his relationship with Jesus. Lliteras infuses his literary world with all the vividness and often heart breaking realism that readers have come to expect from his work. An unforgettable and majestic continuation of Lliteras’ biblical epic, The Thieves of Golgotha.
