During the 1930s, in his native Western Ukraine (then Poland), active in the underground communist movement. Imprisoned by the Polish authorities before World War II. During the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine, 1939-1941, became disillusioned with communism. Joined the Ukrainian Partisan Army (UPA), which led an underground struggle against Soviet rule.
Arrested, 1945, during the return of the Red Army. Sentenced to death, commuted to life imprisonment. Veteran Gulag inmate.
Released, 1967. Rearrested, 1972, for his involvement with Ukrainian dissident groups, and sentenced to 10 years in prison and 5 years exile. Released under Gorbachev, 1987. Emigrated to Canada.
Religion in its origin doesn't give equal treatment to women and thus offends basic human rights.
