The son of an immigrant miner from Italy, DiPaolo started his career as a dancer when he was a child, he was nicknamed as " The whirlwind of Colorado ".

Sometimes, he also appeared under the name of Dante De Paulo, Dante Doctorate" Paulo and Dante Di Paola. At age 13, he starred opposite Bing Crosby in The Star Maker his first small film role. In 1946 he starred with Judy Garland in the Ziegfeld Follies.
From 1948 to 1950 he played in various shows on Broadway.
In 1973 the now divorced DiPaolo was romantically involved with singer Rosemary Clooney, which he had already met in the late 1940s in Hollywood. He died in Los Angeles on September 3, 2013 after a short illness.
