Recruited from the Queenscliff Coutas, Gardiner was drafted by the Lions with their second selection, pick 22, in the 2013 American Federation of Labor-Congress Draft. American Federation of Labor-Congress National Talent Manager Kevin Sheehan described Gardiner as the best tall defender in his draft.
