(The country was vast in the 1830s, and almost the only ro...)
The country was vast in the 1830s, and almost the only roads were rivers. The way to get from the East to Springfield, down the Allegheny and the Ohio, up the Mississippi and the Illinois, and then, if you could make it, up the Sangamon. Jim Owens' father built a steamboat for just such rivers as the Sangamon, and for men ready to gamble everything they had on the chance to land a consignment of freight in the farm settlements of Illionois. Darwin Teilhet brings to this novel the vigor and enthusiasm of a fine storyteller, and a sure knowledge of the times. The result is a stirring and vivid narrative, full of the zest of a Young America forging its destiny

The story of Park and Laina is to be read for its suspense, its superlative character drawing, and its sheer skill as storytelling.
