After a career in hip hop in the 1980s with Groove B. Chill, Mitchell had considerable success as an actor, appearing in House Party and its sequel, Sergeant Bilko, Galaxy Quest, 10 Things I Hate About You, and the television sitcoms The John Larroquette Show and Veronica"s Closet.
