Dave Phillips was born on January 27, 1951, in Findlay, Ohio, United States. He is the son of Robert L. and Donna J. (Phillips) Young.
Dave Phillips attended Findlay High School and Cleveland State University. Phillips studied classical guitar and musical composition privately.
Dave Phillips teaches guitar (various styles, including classical) and bass guitar, and he coaches vocalists who want to sing popular music. Phillips also teaches elementary Yang-style t'ai chi. He is the founder of LinuxAudio.org, a "clearinghouse" organization for professional Linux audio contacts.
He wrote The Book Of Linux Music & Sound, published by NoStarch Press in 2000. He has been a staff writer for the Linux Journal since the late 1990s, and also published in Ubuntu User, Linux User & Developer, and the Computer Music Journal.
